Many classically trained journalists might tell you (if you can find any, that is) that the ultimate responsibility of the news media is to serve as the Fourth Estate, a check on those in power and accountable solely to the people. This apparatus, though benevolent in it’s ambition for democracy of knowledge, has always been far from perfect. Billionaire benefactors, advertisers and government regulators have always shaped the fates of these outlets, but the extended hyper-personalized universe of media today has transformed this once ‘public service’ into a money machine powered by attention. Divisive rhetoric, Drake memes, clickbait for days.

Some author commentary that doesn't count toward our allotted 100. It turns out, 100 words a day on WHATEVER is a really hard assignment for myself. Just remember, I never said they'd all be winners! :)
