Do you know Dada? As in, the early 20th century avant-garde art movement that embraced absurdity and critiqued the social structures of modern life? If the works of Marcel Duchamp or Man Ray come to mind, you’re on the right track. Dadaists were disgusted by the disparate realities of bourgeois ideals about morality and the stark reality of a brutal war. In reaction, they sparked a creative movement embracing the absurd and futile incoherence of human experience and the absolute subjectivity of truth. Dada still exists today, in newsfeeds full of funny, weird, disturbing memes juxtaposed against constant news of the crumbling world order.
